Mitch Cohen

Artist AT LARGE

This would be a short profile type of post. I’m under 6 feet tall, I can paint with both hands, love oil paints, ice cream and my GF. I started Houston’s first monthly art market in 2004, now called First Saturday Arts Market. Some people don’t recognize me if I’m not wearing my hat. Ha ha! That’s me, sans hat. > My bio.

Mitch Cohen is an unremitting behind the scenes art guy living in the Heights. A life long artist, in 2004 he founded First Saturday Arts Market, now Houston’s longest running monthly outdoor fine arts event. In 2016 Cohen created The Market at Sawyer Yards, an outdoor event that focuses on folk art, curated craft and specialty foods. Rarely saying no to a challenge, Cohen has been active in many neighborhood activities, from art walks, promotions and one of Houston’s most popular annual events, White Linen Night in the Heights.

Cohen got started as a professional artist painting billboards (yes, they were painted), co-owned a decorative painting business from 1993 to about 2007 and he even illustrated a couple of books and had an award winning college newspaper cartoon strip. Today he focuses his artistic energy painting portraits. In 2013 Cohen started a weekly arts column called Art Valet in The Leader Newspaper, he interviews artists and writes about local art events. He was an active volunteer with Bayou City Art Festival until in 2017 he accepted a position on the board of directors for the Art Colony Association, Producers of the Bayou City Arts Festival.
