About Mitch

Houston Heights Artist & ARTrepreneur

I’m Mitch Cohen, a lifelong artist and unremitting behind-the-scenes art guy living in Houston’s vibrant Heights neighborhood. As the founder of First Saturday Arts Market in 2004, I created Houston’s longest-running monthly outdoor fine arts event, held September through May. In 2016, I launched The Market at Sawyer Yards, a beloved folk art and craft showcase that thrived for eight years. My passion for community shines through in projects like White Linen Night in the Heights (2006-2019) and various art walks and promotions.

My creative journey spans painting billboards, co-owning a decorative painting business (1993-2007), illustrating books, and creating an award-winning college cartoon strip. Today, I focus on portrait painting while penning the weekly Art Valet column for The Leader Newspaper since 2013, spotlighting local artists and events. I also write the cultural arts column for The Heights Pages Magazine.

A former board member of the Art Colony Association (2017-2023), I continue to volunteer with their Middle School Art Competition, fostering the next generation of creatives.
