Founder – First Saturday Arts Market
Mitch Cohen is an unremitting behind-the-scenes art guy living in the Heights. A lifelong artist, he founded Houston’s longest-running monthly outdoor fine arts event, First Saturday Arts Market, in 2004. In 2016, he launched The Market at Sawyer Yards, a folk art and craft showcase that thrived for eight years. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Mitch has shaped his community through art walks, promotions, and White Linen Night in the Heights (2006-2019).
From painting billboards to co-owning a decorative painting business (1993-2007), Mitch’s career spans book illustrations, an award-winning college cartoon strip, and now, portrait painting. Since 2013, he’s penned the weekly Art Valet column for The Leader Newspaper, spotlighting local artists and events. A former board member of the Art Colony Association (2017-2023), he remains a volunteer with their Middle School Art Competition.
