From THE LEADER: Carrio challenges himself to move forward

I visited Gaston at his studio because he had just won his third bench project from The Woodlands Arts Council. It’s a big deal!

The bench is big too!

The link above is to my interview with Gaston in my column, Art Valet, in The Leader newspaper.

So, I’ve always known Gaston for his paintings. I did notice they kept getting larger, year after year. Gaston started attending First Saturday Arts Market about the same time he started hitting the the big festivals. He quickly outgrew 1st Saturday. I visited him at his booth at Bayou City Art Festival every year.

He would show me these amazing renderings of his bench designs. I didn’t know at the time, that he was actually learning as he went along!

Investing in yourself is very important, and that is what Gaston did, continuously. He found the experts in his field and studied with them.

Walking around the studio – I was struck immediately by four large notes written on storage doors.

As I told him, in nearly every working studio I find inspiring quotes!

For Gaston, he finds the words by the Verblist by Richard Serra to be an inspiration when deciding on a new series of paintings.

Fascinating too – see it and read more about Serra’s 40 Verblist on the MoMa website here.

In the article, I talk about Gaston’s remarkable 20-year career as an international architect. Check out his architectural website: https://gastoncarrio.com/news/architecture/

Artists take note – the crate in the photos below is how Gaston travels now to festivals. He ships the crate ahead of time, stocked with everything he needs, paintings, tents, etc., then he flies to the destination, rents a box truck and gets to work! That is how you do it!
